Oxalic Acid
Oxalic acid is a white crystal, often containing two molecules of crystal water. When heated to 98 ~ 100ºC, oxalic acid hydrate loses crystal water. Anhydrous oxalic acid is a colorless, odorless solid with delixing properties. It has two crystal forms, diamond and monoclinic. At room temperature, rhombic oxalic acid crystals are thermodynamically stable, while monoclinic oxalic acid crystals are thermodynamically metastable. The melting point and density of rhombic oxalic acid crystals are slightly higher than that of monoclinic oxalic acid crystals. Anhydrous oxalic acid melting point 189.5ºC (decomposition). Partial decomposition begins at 157ºC I When accelerated heating, all oxalic acid is decomposed to form formic acid, carbon monoxide and water. Soluble in water and alcohol, slightly soluble in ether, insoluble in benzene, chloroform and petroleum ether. Risk of burning in high heat, open flame or contact with oxidants. Decomposition by heating produces toxic gases.
